VHHA Annual Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Virginia Harness Horse Association will be held at Shenandoah Downs following the races on Saturday, September 23rd.

There are three positions on the board up for election. Any member of the association that wishes to run for the board please contact the secretary at: 757-876-3374

Licensing Requirements for Shenandoah Downs Races

All owners, trainers, drivers, and grooms participating in the Shenandoah Downs races are required to be licensed by the Virginia Racing Commission (VRC).  The easiest way to obtain a license is by going to the Commission’s website at www.vrc.virginia.gov and clicking on “Virginia Racing License” in the upper left hand side of the home page or by clicking here.  You will then see a list of documents including the “Racing Application for Participants”, “General Application Instructions, “Fee Schedule”, and “Credit Cart Verification Form”.  Simply print out the application and complete it by referring to the fee schedule and general instructions.  Once the application is completed, signed, and dated you may either mail it along with the appropriate payment to:

You may also scan the application along with the “Credit Card Verification Form” and email to VRCLicense@VRC.Virginia.gov.

If you would like your badge mailed to you before the races, your application and payment must be received by August 28th, otherwise badges will be distributed at the VRC table in the Lilly Barn.  The VRC will be on site in the Lilly Barn on Wednesday, September 13th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Thursday. September 14th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Friday, September 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for licensing or picking up badges.  (Please note:  All licensing must be completed before participating in a race)

The Virginia Harness Horse Association will be holding the annual general meeting at Shenandoah Downs, in Woodstock, VA on Saturday, October 1st following the races.

There is one (1) vacant position on the Board of Directors, anyone interested in filling this position please contact Iain Wollnough at 757-876-3374 or by email at info@vhha.net.

Also there will be an Election of Officers for 2017.

WELCOME STANDARDBRED HORSEMEN

THE VIRGINIA HARNESS HORSE ASSOCIATION WOULD LIKE TO INVITE ALL STANDARDBRED HORSEMEN TO ATTEND THE INAUGURAL RACE MEET AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED SHENANDOAH DOWNS, (FORMALY KNOWN AS WOODSTOCK) IN NORTH WESTERN VIRGINIA. THE TRACK AND GROUNDS HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY RENOVATED:

  • ½ MILE TRACK WIDENED TO ACCOMADATE 8 HORSES
  • TURNS BANKED
  • STABLES FOR MORE THAN 100 HORSES

WITH THE DEMISE OF COLONIAL DOWNS AFTER OUR 2014 RACE MEET THE VHHA BOARD MADE A COMMITMENT TO CONTINUE RACING AND GROW OUR INDUSTRY IN VIRGINIA.

IN 2015, WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO SECURE 4 DAYS OF RACING AT OAKRIDGE WHILE WE WERE LOOKING FOR A MORE PERMANENT HOME. WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE SHENANDOAH COUNTY FAIR, THE VIRGINIA EQUINE ALLIANCE AND THE VIRGINIA HARNESS HORSEMENS ASSOCIATION WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SECURE A FIVE YEAR LEASE WITH THREE FIVE YEAR OPTIONS AT SHENANDOAH DOWNS.

RACING IN 2016(SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE VIRGINIA RACING COMMISSION) WILL BE TEN DAYS IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER. RACING WILL BE ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY STARTING SEPTEMBER 10TH AND ENDING SUNDAY OCTOBER 9TH WITH A PURSE AVERAGE OF 50K PER DAY.

PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER OF THE VHHA (FORM ENCLOSED) AND HELP SUPPORT OUT EFFORTS TO GROW AND EXPAND THE NUMBER OF RACE DATES IN FUTURE YEARS.

THERE ARE PLANS TO EXPAND THE ELIGIBILITY RULES FOR VIRGINIA BREDS TO ENCOURAGE GREATER PARTICIPATION BY VIRGINIA RESIDENTS.
